September is one of my favorite times to experience Washington, DC.
Summer is winding down, fall is approaching, and the District's event calendar is packed with live music, neighborhood festivals, art, food, culture, and plenty of reasons to spend time outdoors.
Whether you live in Washington, DC, recently moved to the area, or are planning a weekend in the city, September 2026 offers events across some of DC's most distinctive neighborhoods—from The Wharf and H Street NE to Adams Morgan and communities throughout all eight wards.
Here are seven Washington, DC events worth adding to your September calendar.

The festival culminates with a two-day finale at The Wharf on September 5 and 6, with performances along the Potomac Riverfront and at nearby venues.

Events like this highlight something I think people sometimes overlook about living in Washington, DC: despite being a major international city, DC has an incredibly strong local identity.

Art All Night is one of the best opportunities of the year to experience multiple DC neighborhoods after dark.
The free citywide arts festival returns September 11 and 12, bringing visual and performing arts programming to neighborhoods across all eight wards. The 2026 celebration also highlights local artists, makers, businesses, and commercial corridors throughout the District.
Rather than experiencing art exclusively inside a traditional museum or gallery, Art All Night turns DC neighborhoods themselves into destinations.
